2022 Design Trends
NATURE & BIOPHILIC DESIGN
All things raw and organic are still part of the main design and décor trends this year. Incorporating natural materials and using vegetable-based fibres can have a positive impact on a space by connecting interior with our external environment.
The study of biophilic design continues to reveal the deeper human need for connection to the outside world. Indoor plants can be an integral part of interior design projects and large, oversized plants with stylish planters are a growing trend. Biophilic Design has become a hot topic in the interior design field. This kind of design aims to create and maintain a design that connects architecture and interiors with nature. Studies have proven that biophilic design can improve our mental and physical health. The use of reclaimed wood, hanging plants, green walls and large green installations are some of the main trends that will shape interior design in the next decade.
Some other natural materials to include in your next project: Travertine, bamboo, wood, leather, sea grass, rattan. It’s so much more than a trend, and we will always be searching for the best ways to incorporate our love for natural elements in a timeless fashion.
RETRO
This year the 70s and 80s are back and are shaping interior design trends through their colorways, art and furniture. This trend is particularly applicable to the living and family spaces through accent armchairs and statement sofas; investment pieces that will last for decades to come.
When it comes to style and form, all things round and circular are in this year. Think smooth, egg-shaped seating, globular footrests, and things that are soft and plush looking. This leads to our next trend.
ROUNDED/CURVED & VOLUMINOUS FURNITURE
Furniture and decor with softer edges will be seen everywhere this year. We love this trend because this style of furniture can complement more structured pieces, while giving a romantic feel to any interior space. This trend is an element of neotenic design, which is led by furniture with rounded edges and chubby curves and forms. Neotenic design stems from the concept “neoteny” which is the exaggeration of childlike features. Rounded furniture is making a comeback with influences from the 70s. It now has a modernized approach from soft-edge tables to curved contemporary chairs. These softened forms bring spaces a light, young, playful and timeless look.
TINY HOME OFFICE
Home offices have become a necessity in most residential design in the past two years as many of us now work from home. The trend for home offices this year is to incorporate them in small and unexpected spaces. This could be a desk under the stairs, a cupboard desk that can be hidden away, inside a closet, or a dedicated corner of a room.
You don’t need to designate an entire room to have a home office space. With a little creativity and space planning we can help you create a stylish integrated workspace in your home.
FLEXIBLE/MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES
A major ongoing trend is the creation of multifunctional spaces. We are seeing this design approach more and more as people have more needs within their homes and want to make the most of every inch through thoughtful and informed design choices.
Some trends we see are utilizing vertical space through shelving, ladders, and platforms to open various doors and even function as room dividers. With the need for flexibility interiors, interior designers can help you increase space optimization to serve various functions and purposes that meet your needs.
