It's the most wonderful time of the year! If you're anything like us, you enjoy transforming your home into a festive winter wonderland. If it's something you don't feel good at or you don't enjoy, then you may need this list even more! Here are our TOP TEN HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS.

1.   Don’t overdo it!  There are so many holiday décor objects that it can be hard to only choose a few.  Every horizontal surface does not need a holiday chachka!  Restrain yourself to only switching out existing items with the holiday ones.

2.   Feel free to stray from typical holiday colours.  We are loving the neutrals this year or a classic black and white pallet.

3.   If you do go with traditional, consider focusing on one colour and pairing it with a complementary colour. For Christmas, choose either red OR green and pair it with something different.  For Hanukkah, try matching blue with shades of brown or green.

4.   Spruce up your holidays with a touch of fresh greenery.  Not only is it better for the environment but it provides a beautiful aroma to your home.  Soak the fresh greenery overnight to let it absorb all of the moisture it needs.  Then just spritz with water every few days.  Heres a great blog with a few more details on keeping it fresh.

5.   A Christmas tree doesn’t have to be the traditional version.  Maybe you don't have room for an enormous tree or maybe you want to decorate another room in your house.  A tabletop version could work well. Paper trees are great for a more modern take on the holidays, bringing a subtle nod to the season.  If Christmas is not your holiday, try an olive tree or other alternative to add some seasonal fun to your space. 6.   Metals are very important this time of year.  You can mix them but don’t use them all!  Pick one that pairs well with your colour pallet and add a second one sparingly.  I like to use one that is shiny and one that is brushed.

7.   Don’t forget those unexpected spots.  Bathrooms are a great place to add a splash of whimsy with a decorative object or a seasonal piece of art.   Simple ways to do so are greenery in a vase (using your colour pallet of choice, of course) or a seasonal hand towel or candle. Try a festive throw or pillow in the guest bedroom to carry the theme throughout the house.  Even Rover deserves some holiday cheer!

8.   Use mirrors to add sparkle and bring in more light.  Let's face it, the days are short this time of year so we need to create as much light as we can.  Mirrors will reflect light back into a room and can be used as the perfect backdrop for some garland or a wreath.  Mirrored trays work well with a few shimmery glass ornaments or candles.

9.  Coffee table books can add a festive feel to…well, your coffee table.  Choose ones in your pallet of choice or add one that is all about the holidays.  It can serve as a great conversation piece when guests are over.

 10.  Don’t overthink the decor and don't worry about perfection!  Have fun with it! Let the kids help! Be creative! The holiday season is about slowing down and spending time with family and friends.
